Spiced Pear & Pecan Crumble

Ripe pears bake beneath a crisp topping of oats and pecans, with cinnamon and nutmeg in each bite. Cut the fruit to an even thickness so it softens while the top turns golden.

Instructions

  1. Heat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Core the pears and slice them about 1/2 inch thick. Spread the slices in an even layer in a 2-quart baking dish.

  2. Sprinkle about 2 tablespoons of the brown sugar over the pears and turn the slices to coat them. Arrange the fruit in an even layer again.

  3. In a bowl, stir together the flour, oats, cinnamon, nutmeg and remaining brown sugar.

  4. Add the cold butter and rub it into the dry mixture with your fingertips until it forms crumbs, with a few larger pieces left.

  5. Fold the chopped pecans through the crumble mixture. Scatter it over the pears without pressing it down, so the topping stays loose.

  6. Bake for 28–30 minutes, until the fruit bubbles at the edges and the topping looks golden. If the center still feels firm, bake for a few more minutes.

  7. Let the dish stand for 5 minutes before serving so the hot fruit settles and the topping firms up.

Kitchen Notes

Storage & reheating

Storage: Cover and refrigerate the crumble for up to 4 days. Cool it before covering so condensation does not soften the topping.

Reheating: Reheat portions uncovered at 350°F (175°C) until warm. The oven helps the oat topping crisp again.
